I hope this message finds you all well and actively enjoined in something you like to do. Our May stated meeting was held at Jennings-McCall and we had two Brothers from the home attend. It was good to have them there and be able to join in some Masonic fellowship.
Lodge was opened on the Master Mason Degree and we went to refreshment to hear a presentation from Elizabeth (Libby) Hertel on what higher education means to her and her family. Libby, a Forest Grove High School student, Valedictorian of her Senior Class had contacted us about the possibility of a scholarship from Holbrook Lodge, and after several interviews with our Scholarship Committee (Evan Gowins, Charles Negron and Chad Budrow), they were able to determine she was a deserving candidate. She intends to pursue a nursing degree. The Civic and Youth Activities Committee voted to award Libby a $500 Masonic Scholarship from the Civic and Youth Activities Fund. The Committee will also seek another $500 from Grand Lodge in a matching funds program to put with our award to her as well. Our thanks to Brother Evan and his Committee for their work on this.
Awarding this scholarship is just what we as Masons need to be doing to support the youth in our community. The Scholarship Committee will refine the application and selection process over the next year and we will have one or possibly two scholarships to award next spring.
We have the Masonic Family picnic with Tuality Lodge coming up on Saturday July 30. It will be held at a local park most likely in Hillsboro, the location and time will be communicated in a phone tree call to our members.
We will likely be voting on going dark for July and August at our June stated communication. As I have stated before, I am willing to continue to labor in the months of July and August, and it seems likely that we will have a possible EA Degree in June. If the investigating committee report and ballot are favorable, it would be nice to start this young man (26 years old) on his Masonic journey as soon as possible. Please keep this in mind at next month’s meeting, it would be great to keep our ritual skills up in those 2 months.
SW Bob Lanauer, JW Larry White, Sec. Charles Negron, RWB Steve Vanderzanden, and I will all be attending the Grand Lodge Communication on June 2nd and 3rd in Portland. This is a great event, open to all Master Masons and I encourage you all to attend one at some point in your Masonic journey. It is great to meet Brothers from all over the state, our great USA, and even some international Brothers.
We will be scheduling some work parties over the summer to take care of some maintenance needs at the Lodge building. The first one will be soon to prune down the rhododendrons to allow us better access to that side of the building. There is a crack in the stucco on the north side we need to repair, we need to reseal the windows on the north side, and we will be replacing the carpet and repairing the south wall in the ladies lounge. We will also be replacing the toilets and sinks in both the men’s and ladies restrooms. By utilizing the great and varied talents of our members we will be able to keep costs contained and make our Building Fund dollars go farther. These are the first of a long list of deferred maintenance items we will be addressing in the next year. Dates will be set soon, and members notified, it you can help please do so, if you just want to come up and keep us company, keep the coffee and cold drinks coming, do that as well. It is our building, it belongs to all of us, so let’s make sure we can keep it in good shape for another 100 years.
I look forward to seeing you all at our June stated meeting, please make sure we have your correct contact information and e mail address, as we are able to communicate better, faster and more effectively that way.
